-Tips for Catch and Release-
🔹️ Whenever you are planning on catching and releasing, you should be fishing barbless hooks. Otherwise, you should be keeping your fish.
🔹️ When it comes to line size, you should be fishing the appropriate size line for the size of the fish you are targeting. If there is a chance of a large wild trophy, you do not want to hook it on light line. Otherwise, you will exhaust the fish, and it will die. 4 lb minimum in the Sierra.
🔹️ When you land your fish, it should be in a net or into your wet hands if it's small enough. Never drag onto the sand, bank, or rocks. Your net should be rubber lined netting to avoid injuring the fish.
🔹️ When it comes to handling your trout, never touch them with dry hands! The slimy coat on their body acts as a protective barrier, and if disrupted, they can develop a bacterial infection that will kill them. Trout should never be laid on dry hot surfaces like dry grass, sand, hot rocks, cement, etc. Your trout should not be out of the water for more than 30 seconds. If you need time to get a photo, leave the fish in the water until you are ready.
🔹️ When holding your trout for a photo, especially big ones, be sure to support them with one hand gently under the belly nearest the head and one hand at the tail. Never squeeze the belly. That is where vital organs lay and can be easily damaged. Avoid the gills and gill plates all together. These are fine fragile tissues that can tear easily and kill the fish.
🔹️ If you want to weigh your trout, weigh it in your net! Never weigh a fish by their gills or lip, this can injure or break their jaw, which makes it hard or impossible to eat, and they can starve to death.
🔹️ Once you are ready to release your trout, do not throw it in the water. Set it gently in the water and slowly pull backward and forward to allow water to flush through the gills slowly until your fish swims away. If you have injured the fish to the point where it is bleeding out and will not swim away, you now have to dispatch the fish
